Last weekend my friend was posting her steps for the day and she was hitting 12K+ for multiple days so on Monday I commented with my awe and support. And like a true friend she challenged me to join in the “fun”. I “included” another friend of ours as misery loves company. We decided to do a 10K steps per day challenge for 5 days a week.
Firstly I want to state the obvious. 10,000 steps is a lot of steps … way too many steps. It is like a second job. Takes quite some time to get it all in and even then I still had to do laps around my place in order to get all the steps in. Our cut off time was 10 pm.
I started on Tuesday and went for walks outside at lunch on both Tuesday and Wednesday. 40 minutes is not enough to get all those steps in. Thursdays I had to go into the office so I got up early to do a 30 minute Leslie walking workout. I don’t know if it is because I am walking in place but I don’t think my watch captures my steps correctly when I do Leslie workouts. Friday it was colder than I thought was reasonable to be outside, so I did for the very first time an hour long Leslie 4 mile workout. I thought I was going to fall down. And I still didn’t hit 10k steps. 😦
On top of all of this I was still doing my 20 minute weight/walking workouts. AND I STILL HAD TO DO LAPS!?! I went from 20-30 minutes of exercise per day to 75+. By Friday, I was done. My legs were on fire. I decided to take the weekend to rest. Tomorrow we start again. When I step on the scale I am expecting to see big results or else I’m going to be so mad.
Hope all is well in your world.
This year I am determined to get back to healthy. The tipping point for me was feeling my back fat when walking around. Not a fan LOL
Until the end of March, I am reducing the amount of carbs, sugar and dairy that I eat. I have one cheat day when we have our monthly town hall meeting at work and there is cake. I bought more tea than is reasonable over the holidays and that is my after dinner “treat”. It is taking some getting used to but I’ll get there. Flavours like Red Velvet Cake and Creme Caramel help a lot. 🙂
In addition, to watching what I eat, I am also exercising 5 times a week.
These 4 DVDs are in heavy rotation now. I have committed to doing each of the Callanetics workouts once a week and the other two are done in some combination for the remaining 3 days.
Mondays and Fridays are my rest days as those are my longest work days. Now if I could only move my workouts to first thing in the morning, that would be ideal. Small steps, right?
It was only yesterday that I realized that I did not blog on Sunday. Will have to write this in my planner as my mind and routine have not yet adjusted (read remembered) this additional task.
This past weekend has been colder than cold. I worked as usual on Saturday. I was supposed to meet up for lunch with a new friend, but she cancelled. She is a tropical bird and was not on board with choosing to leave the warmth of her house for a meal. We have rescheduled for this Saturday.
I am still working out strong, getting a 5 workouts every week. I forgot to take before measurements and my scale needs a new battery so I am using the way my clothes fit as a way of keeping track. I took a pair of jeans out of the dryer and was able to put them on without any issue. I’ll take that as a win!
This month, my challenge is to reduce the amount of sugar, gluten and dairy I eat. I was out of control over the holidays and need to reign it in. My plan is to do this eating plan until at least the end of March. I am going to cheat on our monthly town hall meetings at work which come with cake 🙂 Three different types of cake!!
Next month I will be putting myself on a no spend challenge. Having a cafeteria at my workplace is a blessing and a curse. It is filled with healthy eats for $7/meal, but the portions received are more than I should be eating in one sitting. I used to split my meal into 2 and eat the second half for dinner but that restraint has left me. I also find that it is hit or miss in terms of taste. So it is better for my waistline and my wallet to bring my lunch. It gets a little tricky on the days I go to my night job as it means I really do have to have all my ducks in a row and pack both meals. So next month Sunday meal prep and cooking will take priority.
I bought an Instant Pot far too long ago and I have not used it. It will be dusted off and I will figure out how to use it. Hopefully this will help on Sundays. My cousin has highly recommended it so I will try to get on the bandwagon.
I have been thinking long and hard about what to do for this challenge. The only thing I keep coming back to is my food bills. They have gotten a little out of control recently. Between the eating out and the stocking up, the amount I spend to feed us has grown tremendously. We now have a rather sizable stockpile that I would like to use up.
Example #1 – The big freezer
While it is not packed in the most efficient way it still contains quite a bit of food. See all the frost growing along the sides? I would like to get this freezer emptied out so I can defrost it as I’m sure frost is not supposed to be in there. I also would prefer an upright freezer instead of the chest version I have. A co-worker of one of my friends is interested in buying mine and therefore I can justify getting an upright. IF only I could get the freezer emptied. We shall see if the interest is still there once it is empty.
Example #2 – The little freezer
Again not efficiently packed but still very full. Various packs of meat and sugary treats dominate this space.
Example #3 – The fridge
You already knew it would not be nice and neat lol. I need to go through the condiments in the door as some of them have been there for years.
Example # 4, 5 & 6 – The shelf, cupboard and pantry
Really need to spend some time organizing these spaces. A friend did it for me a couple of years ago but it seems that we have fallen off the wagon a bit.
As you can see we have lots and lots of food in house. By the end of the weekend I would love to have it all inventoried so I can easily tell what we have.
I am going back to meal planning instead of winging it. I really want to say that we used it all up and did not throw out anything. I know that is not possible as I already am aware of 3 containers in the little freezer that I have no idea what is in them but I know they have been there for at least 2 years. In my misguided mind, I thought I would remember what was in the containers and did not label or date them. Silly bunny. Oh well, lesson learned for next time.
So my girl Carla is doing an October Budget Challenge. I jumped at the chance to join but the only think that I can think of anything other than stay under budget.
This will be rather difficult this month.
Tomorrow I am driving my mother to run a marathon in NY. More on that when I return. My girls are coming with us and it’s Diva’s birthday on Sunday … I already have a gift for her but we always go out for dinner so there will be that.
Next weekend I will be going on a business trip to Denver, CO. My first with this company. I am not really looking forward to it. I leave early Thursday morning and come back late Sunday night. I have never been to Colorado before and hope I have time to take in a couple of points of interest or good restaurants. My girls are going to stay with my BFF, so I will need to leave them some money. Not sure how much will be sufficient.
There are a couple of meals out with friends scheduled.
I have been avoiding the grocery store in my attempt to use up what we have at home. But lack of planning has tempted me twice to just bring home takeout. I held strong so far.
It’s going to be a real challenge, but I’m up for it.
Princess has thrown down a challenge. Even though she’s been complaining that there is no food in the house, she is proposing that other than perishables we not buy anything else until September 15th.
This is completely doable as we have tonnes of meat and carbs in the freezer and pantry. So other than produce & milk we really don’t need to buy anything.
So I am getting on board.
Tomorrow I am going to pick up milk, yogurt, cream, eggs, some fruits & veggies AND NOTHING ELSE!! LOL I’m even taking Princess with me to make sure I stay focused. Although I do want some kind of sugary treat be it ice cream or Popsicles. Hopefully I can sneak it in the cart when she’s not looking. LOL
I don’t really want to talk about March. I was doing “OK” until I left the country then I forget I was on a budget. 😦
So I hope to distract you with what might be my only “win” this month. All the decluttering I did.
Ok, back to reality.
What was I supposed to be doing again?
- Participate in Carla’s March Take 3 challenge – I did join and post about it 🙂
- Come in under budget – Not even close
- Time management – Nope
- Declutter – Partly done, still have a box of CDs to rip
- Work on my afghan – I have added a few more rows
- Daily reading in the morning and evening – Nope
- Read 3 books – I only read The 21 Day Financial Fast
- Stop eating after 8 pm – If I was on point 30% of the time that was plenty
I am still struggling with getting my ducks together. I only exercised 12 times and that was only because since last week I decided to make sure I move every day.
- Move at least 10 minutes every day
- Stick to my budget
- Read 3 books
- Continue to work on my afghan
- Stop eating after 8 pm
- Replace the batteries in my scale and watch
- Figure out what to do with my tax refund
Maybe lucky #7 will be the magic number of goals for me this month.
I broke my budget. I left the country and did not resist the lure of Wal-Mart, Target Wegman’s or Sam’s Club. Others go shopping and buy clothes, shoes and purses. I buy food, dvds and health and beauty stuff. I know I’m a wild one!! LOL
I recently renewed my passport and watched the mailbox like a hawk. Everyone else I know got their passport in exactly a week. Mine took 9 days. 😦 But the minute I got it in my hot little hands I was plotting to try it out.
On the plus side I did manage to find an “affordable” copy of Barre Basics.
Tomorrow is the start of my “at least 10 minutes a day” workout plan.
I still have not tallied my weekend spending. What I know for sure is I am over the amount allotted to me by Canadian Customs, which is $200. Shhhh don’t tell my government. Not all of it is for me. A friend asked me to pick up some things. Plus I really tried to stick to buying products I can’t get in Canada like Aussie conditioner. That bottle of conditioner is worth its weight in gold.
I had a great time.
My only little hiccup is that I bought Brave but I didn’t check the receipt until I got home and realized I paid $6 more that the sticker price. 😦 I am debating holding on to the receipt and the movie and on my next trip going back to the store for my money. Depending on how far in the future that trip is I might actually do it. Or I see a great reason to go back! lol
On the decluttering front, I have ripped one box of CDs. The other box is quietly calling my name. I will pull it out tomorrow. I don’t think I can get it all ripped by month end but I am willing to give it a better try that I have in the past.
As for working out … yeah let’s talk about that tomorrow. 😉
I made a dent.
In the brown box is my mother’s mail that was given to me to sort. In the two boxes to the right of the brown box are full of candles. Hush I had a problem. Underneath the brown box is a box of pictures and under it is a box of unfinished yarn crafts. The white box to the left is full of CDs. It is one of two.
Here is the other.
Those are the ones I still have to rip.
Below are the ones I have ripped to my computer.
My plan is to rip them all to my computer and then sell or give away what’s left. These CDs have been sitting in those boxes since I moved 6.5 years ago. The task of ripping them seemed to be too time consuming. But the time is going to pass anyway so I might as well just do a little every day and then they will be done. 🙂
Sadly when I look at them all I see are dollars spent. 😦
While I was attacking the mess, my girls worked together and cleaned both their rooms. I did not take pictures but I am impressed.
This is the pile of stuff to go to Goodwill. I took the hard drives out of these old computers as it was easier than trying to delete them.
Tomorrow I will be loading it all up and getting it out of here!!
It is freeing getting rid of stuff. Now to settle in to watch Man of Steel after all my hard work.
One of the tasks on my list of things to do this month is to finally tackle the big pile of crap in my dining room. So as my girls are winning the fight with clutter in Princess’ room, I am slowly battling this.
Wish me luck.
