What happened this weekend

Last week, we had a visiting co-worker from California. She is a lovely lady and I got a chance to get to know her better as I was her “date” Friday night since everyone else was busy.

She did not want to spend the evening in her hotel room so I, the homebody, was tasked with figuring out what we would do. I took her to The Real Jerk as she had never had Jamaican food before. She really enjoyed her curry chicken roti. Our waiter was not the most attentive and neglected to bring our jerk flavoured wings and got our drinks mixed up. We still managed to leave full and content.

During dinner she mentioned that she would like to see Niagara Falls before she leaving on Saturday evening. She expressed doubt that she would go by herself so I volunteered to play tour guide. I was up very early to make sure we got there and back in time for her 6 pm flight. From my neighbourhood it’s about 1.25 hours without traffic.

We arrived around 9 am. The first thing we did was buy tickets to the Hornblower boat ride, which takes you to the base of the falls. Even though it was early there was still a short wait.

After that it was time for a meal, some souvenir shopping and then a walk to the falls. We headed back to the car around 2 pm in order to get to the airport by 4 pm giving her plenty of time to return her rental and check in.

It was a great way to spend the day. I forgot how much I love Niagara. And the weather was perfect for being out and about.

A great day

I set my alarm for 6:15 am every morning. And every day until today I have pressed snooze, rolled over and gone back to sleep until at least 7.

This morning I told myself you might as well get up as I was not feeling tired. So I went to work out which is what I am supposed to be doing first thing in the morning.

It felt really great to get that monkey off my back. And it is a good thing too as I left work late, then went to pick up Princess from her job interview. She treated me to ice cream since she GOT THE JOB!! WHOO HOO!! We then went to buy printer ink from Staples which was right beside the nail salon that Diva was in. So we picked her up as well.

I went home, changed out of my work clothes and then we went out to dinner with a friend of mine. The meal was nothing to write home about, but it was nice to sit around a table and catch up.

I didn’t get back home until after 9 and I am beat but still smiling as I have leftovers from last night’s dinner to take to work tomorrow for lunch. 🙂 I made stir fry beef using this great recipe from Budget Bytes. It was so good. I didn’t have any rice noodles so I just made rice.

Okay, I need to get into bed so I can wake up and work out again tomorrow. 🙂

Oh wait, I forgot to mention my new work BFF talked to our old department head and she told her that I am learning quickly and she’s impressed with me. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Best news!

Wkend recap – 9/21/15

I’m slowly getting back on track with the exercise but not quite there yet. Last week was 3 days. And that’s only because I accidentally got in some exercise on Saturday.

Let’s back track a bit. Saturday night found me downtown at a TIFF film. My BFF scored tickets to see “I Smile Back“. It was okay. I could have waited until it came out on video. We then walked 10 minutes looking for some place to eat before we gave up and went to meet her ex-coworker who was having a birthday party at a bar nearby. A 20+ minute walk away. See how I accidentally got in a workout?? Genius, I know. If only I could have planned it so well. lol

Anyhoo, we walked to the bar to socialize and it was a nice little get together. On a side note, the ex-coworker is very artistic and when I get a proper plan, I will look into hiring her to create a painting or two for me. I have a lot of bare walls and love real paintings as opposed to prints. I am also a big fan of supporting local talent, so fingers crossed she’s affordable.

I am on day 8 of my 12 day cleanse and I can’t wait for it to be over. Saturday night proved to be challenging to find some place that fit my strict dietary restrictions. We ended up at an Italian place, the name long forgotten, that was not so good. We sat at a table indoors by the window and there were little flies falling from the light above. We definitely had to change tables. I had grilled fish and veggies with mashed sweet potato. The sweet potato was not so good and the fish was meh. My BFF had the duck risotto and was not impressed. Now that I think about it maybe we should have taken the name so we can remember not to go back. lol

Yesterday was a semi-lazy day with a quick trip to Costco to return some corn bought on Thursday that went bad far too quickly. I got my $4 back but then spent $60 … I was taking my mother to buy a few things or else I think I would have let the corn go.

Vacation recap

As promised I took a picture of the view from my cousin’s sun room. I has mistakenly called the body of water a lake but it’s actually Chesapeake Bay.

The view

Every morning this is what I looked at as I enjoyed a cup of coffee. I was in heaven and it strengthened my resolve to eventually get a piece of property with a view like this.

Ok so when we last left off, I had arrived on Friday afternoon. We stayed in Friday and just hung around the house.

Saturday morning, after breakfast we went shopping at Marshalls and HomeGoods. It took forever to get through these two stores and we were hungry when we left.

My kids and I are big fans of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and try to hit up some of the places featured on the show. Princess and Diva saw an episode where the show was in Baltimore and actually remembered the name of the restaurant. However given where we were it was not exactly near by. So my cousin suggested another restaurant, also featured on “Triple D”. We went to a greasy spoon called “Chick & Ruth’s Delly“.

Chick & Ruth

It truly is a hole in the wall. The food was good, but I found it a bit salty. The kids had burgers of varying sizes. My cousin had the lump crab cakes and I had a Reuben sandwich.

After lunch we strolled down Main Street for a little while.

Main street

After wandering through a few tourist traps, we returned to my cousin’s house as neither she or her daughter wanted to go to Target with us. We tend to turn it into an ordeal so I don’t blame them.

I found a shirt and a dress in the clearance section and was horrified when I went to try them on. The mirrors in the change room showed me that Project Get Healthy needs to be revived asap!

We all slept in on Sunday and slowly made our way to DSW and Nordstrom Rack in search of shoes for the girls. Princess found the pair of all white Converse shoes she was looking for. Diva was out of luck. Afterward we went to a free concert given by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Our “seats” were crappy as we were more interested in being in the shade that actually seeing the performers.

The symphony

This is a small sampling of the amount of people who attended as the concert was ending.

The crowd

It was a great evening. We bought some Peruvian chicken with sides and had a picnic in the park while listening to some wonderful music.

After the concert we headed home to relax some more.

My plan for Monday was to leave around noon. We left just after 1 pm. There is a little small town about 3 hours away that we always stop at to do some additional shopping, because we can’t shop enough!! LOL Plus Diva still hadn’t found her all black Converse shoes. I was very surprised that every store in this small town was open on Labour Day. Such a change from Toronto where I think only malls designated as tourist attractions are open on statutory holidays.

We were successful with finding the shoes Diva wanted. 🙂 This stop was about 2 hours long. We safely arrived home just after midnight. Traffic was fantastic. Moving forward my new plan for these trips will be to leave extra early on my trip down and extra late on my trip back.

What I did recently

Toronto sign

The Pan-Am games are here. This picture taken at Nathan Phillips Square is the only “participation” I have done. I love this sign and am glad it will remain long after the games are gone.

I recently went to Wahlburgers. It is a restaurant owned by Mark and Donnie Wahlberg. It was more at the request of a friend and you know how “accommodating” I am! 😉 I read the reviews on Yelp and they were less than desirable. The food was meh. Nothing to write home about. Even if it was next door I don’t think that I would go again. I didn’t like that everything was sold separately. The bill was just under $38 for 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 1 order of onion “rings” and 2 sodas. WTF!?!

So … last night

My BFF is the absolute best.  Since I have been in a bit of a mood she took it upon herself to plan an evening out.

Recently she went to New Orleans and as much as I wanted to go as it’s been on my list FOREVER; I am still within the probationary period at work and it’s our black out period.

She came back raving about the food, which only makes me want to go even more.

So last night we went to a restaurant named New Orleans. The food was good but not great.  For appetizers, she had the seafood gumbo and said it was better in New Orleans.  I had the crab cakes.  They were ok.  For dinner we shared the Jambalaya for 2.  Portion wise it was more like for 6 as we both came home with 2 big take out containers.  It too was good but not great.  It was lacking something that I can’t put my finger on. The dessert menu was not calling us so that was the end of our stay here.

Anyhoo … this restaurant just intensified my desire to go to New Orleans.

After dinner, we went to a 35+ singles party … in a hotel … where I swear the average age was 55 … While I don’t own up to the years I have lived they are nowhere near 55. I think we were the youngest in the room.  While it was not a bad experience, it was not one I want to repeat.  Men my father’s age were trying to dance/talk to me.  It was a bit surreal.

Saddest part out of all of this is I was home before Diva who went to her BFF’s birthday party.

Willing the weekend to come

Every night this week I have some thing to do.

Last night we went to the chiropractor.

Tonight we went to do our eyebrows.

Tomorrow I am going to see my cousin.

Thursday I am getting together for my monthly all you can eat sushi dinner.

Friday I am taking my car to the mechanic as it is making some creaky noises that I didn’t notice before.

If the mechanic finds an issue with my car then I will be returning bright and early Saturday morning to get my car fixed.

Sunday is a birthday party for an Aunt who is visiting from the States.

Most of the time my life is very quiet and mundane.  But every so often it seems like I’m the life of the party!! LOL

I need to get my tail up in the morning and do at least 10 minutes of exercise as I don’t feel like I can fit it in anywhere else this week.

And I need to get my self into bed at a reasonable hour so I get enough rest.

Belly bloat is no joke

For the past few weeks/months I have been craving steak.  So when one of my friends suggested we get together for dinner, The KegSteakhouse seemed like a good choice.  When I was last there I tried a mini creme brulee and enjoyed it.  So when I was there on Thursday I ordered a full size one.

And for a while I was good.  A little over stuffed but good.

Until I went to bed.

I don’t know if it was the shift from vertical to horizontal but my stomach started talking to me … loudly.  At one point I thought I was re-enacting that scene from Alien where the alien pops out.

Of course I don’t stock things like Pepto or Tums so I gathered what strength I had and warmed up my magic bean bag.

I spent the night curled around it.

Yesterday morning I could not straighten up without pain so I took the day off and hobbled around the house.  Eventually the pain subsided but the bloat is taking it’s own sweet time to go away.

I still have a little bloat this morning which I am going to possibly irritate by going to an all you can eat sushi lunch.  I would cancel but since this lunch has been rescheduled twice already I feel like I should just take one for the team.

Here’s hoping that I don’t make things any worst.

For the record, I am totally blaming the creme brulee for my troubles.

What’s new

I am feeling like I haven’t seen my computer in a long while. 😦

Tuesday I went to Costco, which we all know is a giant time suck.  I picked up Jillian’s Hard Body and put it back down again.  I did put it on hold again at the library.  After Costco, I hit up the local grocery store to get a few things I don’t want in bulk or can’t get from Costco.  By the time I got home I was ready to relax.  Luckily for me, Diva can operate the oven and heated up a frozen pizza for dinner.  I steamed some broccoli to go with it and called it a happy day.

Last night I met up with old co-workers for dinner at my favourite all you can eat sushi spot.  We met for about 5:30 and didn’t leave until after 9.  I forgot it was a school night!! LOL  It was a great time had by all.

Tonight I was super grateful that I didn’t have anything planned.  The weather is ugly.  And from what I hear the snow will turn to rain.

In February.

It’s too much people.  Much too much.

I made pelau for dinner, a one pot meal of rice, chicken and beans.

Tomorrow I think I will make spinach roll ups as I have some spinach that needs to be used up.

On a different note, I opened up CNN to read that the Canadian Women’s Olympic hockey team won gold!!  Now, I am just waiting for the Men to step up and bring it all home!!  I don’t ordinarily watch hockey but I do watch the Canadian Olympic teams … only when they are winning though. 😉  The Vancouver games ignited a sense of national pride in me.  I almost got a maple leaf tattoo, it was so intense.

Learning my limits

*So I swear I published this on Saturday but clearly I was wrong*

I used to be able to eat with abandonment.  But lately I am painfully learning that is no longer my ability.  I am really hoping it’s a temporary thing.

On Thursday I took my BFF to have some elective surgery done on her tongue.  To thank me she took me to a buffet where I didn’t think I ate that much but … I did not need eat dinner that night.  When I counted my calories I had over 1500 at lunch alone. 😦

I am not sure if it was the quality or quantity, but I felt like crap Friday morning.

I did not inherit my mother’s “cast iron” stomach.  My Mom can eat just about anything without any adverse reactions.

So it was because I was weak from Tuesday or Thursday’s Chinese buffet really was just not right, but either way I’m labeling this as a cumulative effect.  I am calling it a fluke and unless I have tummy issues this week, it’s a one-off in my book. 😉

Thankfully today I am back to feeling like myself.
