Not this past weekend but the weekend before, I went to a local chain restaurant and noticed there was a sign up announcing they are hiring. Since kitchen renovations don’t pay for themselves, I decided to go for it.
Instead of getting an application on the spot, I applied on-line. Truth be told I was really hungry and didn’t want to delay eating.
On-line there were also positions available in their call center, so I applied for that as well. I got an email last week to set up an interview for today. The call center is about 10 minutes away from my day job and about the same timing from my home.
At my interview, I was given an application to fill out. It included my availability. The shifts are longer that I would like. The shortest one is 6 hours. The latest shift starts at 5 pm. My day job ends at 5 pm. They are willing to work with me and offer a later start time. Even with that, I’m not sure that this is an opportunity I really want to take on.
There are mandatory shifts. One must work 2 out of 3 days between Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weekend shifts are all evening shifts. Basically the weekend would be gone. Also, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are mandatory.
The lady who interviewed me is not the one making the decision, but she did think I would hear by the end of the week if they want to offer me the job. Training would be 2-3 days and then I would be live.
It doesn’t seem like complicated work. I would be taking food orders over the phone and entering it into their system.
I didn’t think to ask what the minimum amount of shifts I could work per week. I am hoping it is 2 or 3. Even that makes for long days as the earliest end time is 11 pm. While I am usually up at that hour, I am happily relaxing on the couch.
I think if offered the job, I will take it and try it out. Worse case scenario, if I don’t like it I can quit. Plus extra money can’t hurt right?
Sometimes I really love my friends. One of my oldest friends sent me a text last week to let me know her workplace is hiring. I immediately sent her my resume. We went back and forth regarding some of the details of the job and the company. I told her my salary range and that I was flexible and the HR rep from her company still sent me an email inquiring about coming in for an interview.
I am fairly sure the position will pay less than my current gig. How much less remains to be seen. I am trying to figure out how much of a salary cut I am willing to do. My main focus is the ability to grow, short term pain for long term gain. 😉
There are other benefits that might make a pay cut acceptable, such as retirement contributions matching and profit sharing. It is further away (20 mins vs my current 10) and would take me back to 2 weeks vacation …
I have given either Tuesday or Wednesday as options for the interview and will probably take the day off. I need a break. Last week was incredibly frustrating as it was determined that I must get a laptop even though I will never take it home. I live 10 minutes away and am a workaholic. I don’t see a time/day that I could not make it into work. What I can reasonably see is that I would start working from home and making my days even longer. No thanks.
Back to the new laptop which was not set up when I came into work … 😡 Couple that with we are doing renovations and needed to pack up and empty our desks so the new carpet could be installed over the weekend. I took everything I owned home. I am mentally done.
I hope when I get my next job offer I can give more than two weeks notice as it does take long to find acceptable candidates. One of my team members is leaving and has told our manager. My manager can not start interviewing until my coworker hands in her written resignation.
The madness continues. I hope this week’s interview will being positive results. Wish me luck!
So you know how I vague and cryptic on Monday? Well I can now tell you what that’s all about.
I have been on the hunt for a new job for the past 6+ months. I have applied to what feels like a tonne of jobs, had my fair share of interviews but nothing really felt right.
Until 2 weeks ago when I went for an interview with a company that is just up the street from my home. The interview went really well and it felt so much like a great fit that I actually sent a “real” thank you email. Usually I send a generic thank you, I know shame on me.
Anyhoo, I didn’t hear any thing other than a thank you for my email, so last Thursday I sent a follow up email. The response I got said that they have one more interview to do and if I don’t hear from him by end of day Tuesday to contact them again. The same day I got a phone call from a woman who worked for a company I worked for 10 years ago. We had a long conversation that seemed promising.
On Friday morning the woman called to arrange an in person interview THEN in the afternoon the HR person from the job I wanted called requesting my references and permission to run a background check. 🙂
To give myself options, I went to the interview on Monday morning. By Monday afternoon, I was presented with a job offer but I was still waiting for my preferred company. I had to stall as they wanted me to start on Tuesday.
Yesterday I got a job offer from the company I want!! Start date is Feb 22.
So this means I am off to MD on Friday. If I hadn’t gotten the job I wanted I would have taken the job offered on Monday which wanted me to start this week.
I am very excited for this new opportunity and can’t wait to get started on this new chapter.
