Making good financial decisions

Life is just chugging along over here. Each week is looking more like the last with respect to exercise and work. I took Thursday and Friday off this week to rest and relax. I was also going to go to a new salon on one of my days off to get my hair trimmed. I was talking about it with my Aunt who recommended her hairdresser who is 1/6 of the price of the salon downtown.

So I am going to give it a shot. Worst case scenario it doesn’t work out for me and I’m out a few dollars. Best case I find a new and very affordable hairdresser. I am really  hoping for the latter. Either way my hair gets a long overdue trim. The back is really in need of some assistance and attention.

Today was one of my Aunt’s 65th birthday and she came in from Arizona to have a party. It was great, I got to see a lot of her family that I only see at these types of events. To clarify this Aunt is my cousin’s mother and we are not related by blood and even though she is no longer involved with my Uncle I still keep and honor the relationship. She has again told me that I have an open invitation to visit her any time. I will definitely think about it next winter.

Since I was out today and lazing yesterday, I did not cook. There are enough leftovers to get me to Tuesday night so I should be OK. I am still trying to keep my food spending under control. I bought lunch last week as salmon was on the menu and I was greatly disappointed. It helps to reinforced the idea that I need to cook. Spending money and not getting what I want, be that good food or good service, just makes me mad.

My goal this week is to get to be before midnight, so I need to get going.

Have a great week.

This and that

On Friday my building had a holiday potluck party.  It was supposed to run from 7-9.  Since I arrived home at 6:30 tired and unprepared, I decided to opt out and relaxed on the couch.  Diva arranged for her Dad to come pick her up so she could spend the weekend with him.  He didn’t show up until 11 pm. I walked her downstairs to get him to sign a document.  As we walked out of the elevator, my neighbours still at the party, yelled my name.  Who knew this was a happening place to be.

Once Diva left, I went to the party and hung out for 1.5 hrs.  These folks did not want to go home.  There were many empty bottles on the table and lots of food still left.  It seemed like a good time was had by all.

I have a neighbour that I haven’t seen in a couple of weeks at least.  Her parking spot is empty and every time I see it, I get a bad feeling.  Well it looks like I was right.  According to her family members, she had a stroke while traveling in the US and is now in hospital in a coma and has been there for 2-3 weeks.  She is not yet stable enough to be brought back to Toronto.  This just makes me so sad as she is such a kind person.  Whenever I see her in the hall she would always tell me she is praying for me.  I guess now is my turn to pray for her.  Please feel free to add her into your prayers as well.

Today was another day that confirmed I really do need to change jobs.  My last day will be December 31 unless they walk me out sooner.  The politics in this place just doesn’t work for me.  I can’t wait to be gone.

On a completely different topic, I miss the sun.  It was another grey day, this time with rain.  It washed away most of the snow and what was left behind is now muddy and gross.  I don’t mind the cold what I need is bright light.  I even contemplated buying a wake up light to help me get up in the morning as this girl is dragging. I fought temptation and bought this instead.

Baggallini Everywhere Cross-Body Bag (EWY571-NALG) - Navy

I have always wanted this bag but the price was a bit much for a nylon bag.  But at almost 42% off sure why not.  I figure I can always return it if I don’t love it when it arrives, right?

A busy weekend to come

Sometimes it seems like when it rains it pours.  Most week-ends I have just my regular chores, and I am home thinking I should do something exciting.  Then out of no where I have weekend that’s jam-packed.  Doesn’t anyone know I was free at other times? LOL

Tomorrow around mid-day I am going to see a girlfriend who just adopted the most perfect child to fit into her family.  It really did seem like this little girl was meant to be with my girlfriend.  I’m so happy for her and excited to meet her newest addition.  (I will be taking my new camera and hopefully I can get some good pictures.)

Tomorrow night is a dinner/dance boat cruise that I let myself be talked into going.  I think it should be fun.  I have not been out to party in far too long.  I am becoming a little old lady.  Soon all I will need are the 7 cats. 😉

Sunday I am going to visit my cousin in Kingston.  We are going to have a picnic at a beach.  It should be a great time.  **Note to self: Pick up a lens filter if you want to take the new camera.  I think sand and new camera may not go well together. lol

Since I have all these plans, I really need to kick it up a notch tonight and do some chores so I am not crying next week.

What a great party

Firstly I am not sure how my Dad & step-Mom managed to pull off a surprise party for my Grandfather while he is staying at their house but they did.

I was assigned appetizer duty.  And even though I borrowed platters and a beverage dispenser from one of my friends, it still did not stop me from purchasing this.

Once my step-Mom told me her plan was to have everyone outside I thought we need to keep the dip cool as food poisoning is never fun. This tray is comprised of many parts.  The compartments sit on top of the base which you can put ice in to keep everything cool.  Plus it also has lids so you could cover up your food.  I was impressed and so was most of my family.  One of my Aunts told me if I forgot it at my parents’ house, I should look for it in her house!! LOL

This little gem of a serving tray also got me “work”.  I did such a good job with the veggie tray that one of my Aunts wants me to make one on Saturday for the party she is throwing my Uncle.

I picked up one of my Grandmother’s friends and was the second to arrive.  A little while later my Grandmother came downstairs and was shocked to see some of her oldest friends and me.  My Grandparents live in the Caribbean and have not seen me or my kids in over 10 years.  Going to visit them is on my list of things to do but it is so expensive to fly the 3 of us down there that I kept putting it off.  It was nearing the top of my list when I learned they would be coming to Toronto. 🙂

It was a great party.  My Grandparents are in their 80s and thank God healthy and capable.    They are here for 2 weeks and I will be going to spend more time with them.

The week-end

The week-end was fantastic.  I am now recovered!

Saturday I attended a birthday party for one of my Aunts from my Dad’s side.  For a party without liquor and dancing it was pretty good!! She was happy and seemed to enjoy herself.  Her sister and brother came from the States to celebrate.  It was a great mini family reunion.

Sunday I along with most of my relatives who went to the party went ice skating.  It was cold.  I did not skate.  Instead I let my kids try it out.  I have never skated in my adult life and figured trying to get use to skating with my kids who are also shaky would be a recipe for disaster.  After that we all went to my Dad’s for food and football.

It was a great week-end.

And it didn’t cost too much!

Spending report to come tomorrow.
